Monade, abbaye d’Orvinio

01 · The project
Abandoned for centuries, the abbey of Orvinio reappears not as a relic but as a living place. The project goes beyond heritage restoration: it sets the ruin within a temporal continuity, through light and reversible contemporary interventions, what is added can be removed, and the ruin stays legible beneath.

02 · Programme & uses
An airy steel structure follows the existing outlines and redraws the original volume without ever masking the marks of time. Raising the bell tower becomes the project’s strong gesture: it reasserts the monument’s presence in the landscape and serves as a landmark for the whole route.

03 · The site
The route is designed as a sensory, meditative experience. In the nave, individual cells offer intimate retreats, while a collective space set below invites shared meditation. A restaurant, exhibition rooms and baths inspired by antique thermae extend the contemplative vocation of the place: water becomes the final threshold, that of renewal.
