École de musique de L’Arbresle

01 · The project
The school settles into the rolling relief of L’Arbresle, twenty kilometres from Lyon, in resonance with the Couvent de la Tourette and the village around it. Rather than imposing a volume, the building stretches sideways and anchors itself partly into the ground: it follows the slope instead of correcting it, and its visual impact fades accordingly.

02 · Programme & uses
Inside, every volume is conceived as an acoustic instrument. The classrooms, open and adaptable, suit different forms of teaching; the 215 m² auditorium, heart of the project, is designed as a sound case, its acoustics held as much by the geometry as by the materials. Control room and storage slip behind, in the twenty-five and fourteen square metres allotted to them.

03 · The site
The route unfolds along the terrain: each space opens onto a different panorama, and natural light and passive ventilation are built into the design rather than added afterwards. Glued laminated timber and local stone anchor the facility in its territory, a public building that belongs to the landscape before it belongs to the brief.
